passport-sizedLUCY | Why Choose Me?

Having recently completed the MA in Translation Studies (with Interpreting) at Nottingham University (distinction expected), I am looking to expand my freelance career. I have experience of both translating and proofreading a wide variety of texts, and have been freelancing alongside my studies to put my theoretical knowledge into practice. I have lived, studied and worked in both France and Spain in order to hone my language skills, and I am a qualified teacher of English as a Foreign Language (CELTA), demonstrating a high level of written and spoken English in addition to my foreign languages. I am passionate about translating to the highest standards, and am looking forward to registering as a member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.

About me

I began to learn French and German at secondary school, and after a successful French exchange (the first time I had ever been abroad), I felt like a whole new world had opened up to me and I was hungry to learn about it. At college I took GCSE Spanish after only one year of study, and then fast-tracked Spanish A-level, also completing it in one year which allowed me to take French and Spanish at advanced level at Lancaster University. Although my third year abroad presented its challenges, I relished the opportunity to study at world-class institutions and not only improve my languages, but also develop my confidence and communication skills. After graduating, I knew I wanted to further improve my French language skills and so I took a job as a lecturer at the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris, helping students to develop their spoken English and apply for jobs and internships in English-speaking countries. I feel that the year in Paris was a way to achieve things that I did not have the confidence for at the start of my first year abroad, and I loved engaging first-hand with residents as a part-time nanny, and in the professional domain at ESCP.

My MA course has followed on from my improved language skills and widened my appreciation of French translation and interpreting. I have discovered a deep interest in Audio-Visual Translation and I am excited to have been involved in producing literature for the under-researched area of Audio Description. My other area of academic interest is the translation of minority languages, specifically with regards to language revitalisation.

Now, I am keen to embark on my freelance translation career. Currently based in London, I am looking to really establish myself as a French translator of the highest quality.

BA (Hons) French and Spanish Studies, Lancaster University 09/2009 – 07/2013
• 2:1 achieved.
• Included third year abroad studying in Bilbao, Spain and Geneva, Switzerland. In Geneva, I produced a dissertation entitled ‘Will there ever be interpreters of Manx Gaelic?’
• Translation dissertation from Spanish into English of an excerpt from San Manuel Bueno, Mártir.

4 A-levels, York College 09/2007 – 07/2009
• French (A), Spanish (B), Religious Studies (B), History (B).

In April this year I gave a paper entitled ‘Translating the revival in Man– the role of translated texts in language revitalization on the Isle of Man’ at the inaugural symposium for a new research group at Nottingham University, the theme of which was ‘Making Interdisciplinarity Work: Linking Languages, Texts and Society’. It was fascinating to meet other arts researchers and get a glimpse into different avenues of academic research.

In November 2014 I completed the CELTA course, qualifying me to teach English as a Foreign Language and solidifying my knowledge of English language and grammar.

Currently, I am exploring publication of my Master’s thesis on Audio Description for ballet.

I have danced since the age of 3 and hold all IDTA ballet grades, as well as Silver Award Tap. I have taught multiple dance classes for children and adults of all abilities.

me290816KEITH | Why Choose Me?

I hold a PhD in Latin American studies from Kings College, University of London, and have lived in Bolivia and Peru for over ten years.I also have a BA (minor) in French, and have lived for some time in Italy, so I have both academic and practical knowledge of all three languages. I have experience in a wide range of texts including work for NGOs, news agencies, novelists and filmmakers.

About me

I am a UK national and have taught at universities in this country as well as the US, Bolivia and Peru. I am available for any assignment immediately.

Integrity above all: rigorous attention to accuracy in translation, to the absolute satisfaction of the client. I am used to working to a deadline and to turning texts around in a very short time (I currently work on this kind of assignment for a news agency in Bolivia which is sufficiently pleased to have continued using my services since 2012.

My Education as French Translator

Doctorate (1994) King’s College, University of London. Latin American Literature.
Thesis: The Mestizo Imaginary (published in Plural, La Paz, Bolivia as Lo imaginario mestizo: a study of the novels of Néstor Taboada Terán. Year abroad spent in Bolivia.

BA (1987) University of North London. Hispanic Studies and French (1st Class).
Year abroad spent in Peru: dissertation on the novelist José María Arguedas (Arguedas was a pioneer of intercultural fiction in South America, having been brought up among Quechua-speaking Indians despite being ethnically ‘white’).

I was a coordinator of the year abroad and adviser for students at the University of Leeds (this included visits to Peru and Ecuador) and the program abroad in Granada, Spain (also visited). As an academic I was constantly involved in Professional Training workshops and short courses. These included teaching and technical knowledge in the US, where I created and maintained my own webpage. At the University of Leeds I was involved in teaching workshops and development of academic staff.
Also in an academic capacity I have attended and given papers at a great many conferences and events in the UK, US, Spain etc. I have published four books (to date) on subjects relating to Latin America. In Costa Rica I opened and ran my own language school (in Cahuita, Talamanca).
In Bolivia I was employed as a film actor (usually type-cast in ‘baddie’ roles, which had more to do with my Caucasian appearance than any innate tendency, I might add!)

Services I offer as French Translator

My last one-off assignment may give you some idea of my capacities: I translated a novel (about the World War II experience of Polish Jews emigrating to Bolivia). The subject is well-enough documented in non-fictional terms, but is here given novel treatment. The job included rigorous editing and correction, and I am now actively seeking a publisher.
My work for Extend Communications in La Paz is ongoing and conducted by email. It involves quick French translation of the day’s news (including any content of interest to mine-owners: the final recipient is the Sumitomi Corporation in Japan).

French Translation and Interpreting fields I specialise in

I have experience of working in a great many fields. As I said above, this mainly includes work for NGOs, but creative writers have also used my services as well as private companies operating in many different capacities. As a creative writer myself I can offer inventiveness and imagination in my translation work as well as near-native fluency (particularly in Spanish), as well as accuracy in work on technical texts.

I am not used to working as an French interpreter, though I have done so on occasion. I would not be entirely adverse to this kind of work if the need were to arise.
The following is a selection of my previous assignments:
January 2012: Indianizar el cine (Indianizing Film). Book by Freya Schiwy on indigenous film and video, for publication in Plural, La Paz, 2012. Translated from English into Spanish.
August 2011: El poder de la virtud (The Power of Virtue): self-help manual by Andrés Ortuste.
May 2011: Environmental and construction guides/manuals. Guía Ambiental Vivienda, Guía Ambiental Agua and Saneamiento, Guía Ambiental Establecimientos of Salud and Guía of Manejo de Residuos Generados en Establecimientos de Salud. Manuals published by NGO Socios para el Desarrollo /Partners for Development PROSALUD.
July 2010: CIPCA y el poder indígena campesino (CIPCA and peasant – indigenous power) history by Vera Gianotten published by the Dutch Royal Tropical Institute.
January 2010: Zapatero a tus zapatos. (Mind your Business: 2008-2010 script for feature film by Paolo Agazzi (Bolivia, Pegaso Films).
I can work on a variety of texts in an advisory capacity: this can involve tailoring the tone and content to a given market, proofreading and editing.
